What is ITE?
The Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) is an international educational
and scientific association of individuals employed in the field of transportation.
ITE membership includes:
- Transportation engineers
- Traffic engineers
- Transportation planners
- Professionals who are responsible for meeting mobility and safety needs.
The Institute facilitates the application of technology and scientific
principles to research, planning, functional design, implementation, operation,
policy development and management for any mode of transportation. This
goal is acheived by promoting professional development of members, supporting
and encouraging education, stimulating research, developing public awareness,
and exchanging professional information; and by maintaining a central point
of reference and action.
Founded in 1930, the Institute serves as a gateway to knowledge and
advancement through meetings, seminars, and publications; and through our
network of more than 13,000 members working in some 70 countries. The Institute
also has more than 70 local and regional chapters and more than 90 student
chapters that provide additional opportunities for information exchange,
participation, and networking.
ITE at the University of Illinois
Here at the University of Illinois the
student chapter is located in the department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.
Our goal is to introduce students to the transportation
profession and supplement their classroom and laboratory experiences. This
is done through guest lectures and presentations by transportation professionals
to the students at the general meetings, field trips to transportation
engineering sites, and other extracurricular activities. In addition, ITE
provides a forum for transportation engineers to gather, exchange ideas,
socialize, and interact. Finally, ITE seeks to promote transportation engineering
at the University of Illinois.
