Was
this company a good match for your interests?
This company, or more formally called, this civil
engineering consulting firm, was a perfect match for me. It definitely gave me clear path for what I want to be and how to get
there.
What
were some of the topics or ideas discussed?
Basically I was shown different completed and in
progress projects and explained how each take its course.
Shadowing Dave, the transportation engineer, I learned the second and
third stages to all civil engineering projects (detailed planning through a set
of land surveys and AutoCAD documents & then basic construction of the
structure). From Sarah, the
structural engineer, I was exposed to the first stage, which was the preliminary
planning and consulting with other companies.
I also worked with some computer applications dealing with traffic impact
and load distributions.
Were
there any special activities planned for you?
I was grateful to have scheduled my job shadow on an
eventful day. Initially I had a
tour of TranSystems and then headed to a Web-inar, a basic web conference
discussing new updated software from the headquarters in Texas.
Then I sat down with each person separately and learned both sides:
Transportation and Structural Engineering. After
lunch with the both of them, there was a short assignment and funny quiz, which
made things more comfortable. I was
also fortunate enough to be able to sit in on a meeting between TranSystems and
another consulting firm. This
certainly gave me a glimpse of the real business world and was very helpful.
Would
you recommend this program to other students?
I would recommend this program to other students
because it gives you more than finding out what a Civil Engineer is.
You can also learn the in’s and out’s of the business world and get
a clear picture of the near future, like classes and graduate school, etc.
Comments/Suggestions:
I just thought that the organization of this program
was done quite well, so I give props to ASCE.
Thanks, and hopefully more students take advantage of this because it is
a great opportunity.
